Confirmation

Confirmation

Confirmation at First United Methodist Church of Marion is an opportunity to immerse an emerging youth in the basic teachings of the Christian faith and be trained in the way of discipleship.  All 7th graders and 8th graders new to the church are invited and encouraged to participate IN THIS 13 MONTH EXPERIENCE.

i. 1 Samuel 12 23bAnd I will teach you the way that is good and right. 24 But be sure to fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you."

ii. Psalm 25 4 Show me your ways, O LORD ,
teach me your paths;
5 guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are God my Savior,
and my hope is in you all day long.
6 Remember, O LORD , your great mercy and love,
for they are from of old.

Pastor Mike and the leaders desire to lead kids towards being active residents of the kingdom of God, those who are willing to serve Him faithfully all of their days. Everything we do has the intent of building the child into a disciple for Jesus Christ and servant of his Kingdom. We have no other purpose or agenda.

Our methods and components:

a) Small groups
Sunday 9:45 AM session taught by leaders who love kids and desire God’s blessings for them.

Wednesday 5-6:20 PM sessions taught by Pastor Mike – Students come when their small group is scheduled (about 7 times during the school year).

b) Service
Each student will perform 8 hours of community service to community, region, church or world.

c) Special Events
A number of field trips, a lock in and other special activities are part of the program.

Our Materials
Our Confirmation class is tailored for students at First United Methodist Church. The information taught is centered on basic Christianity and the things United Methodists cling to that to that make us distinct in the Christian community.

Our Timeline
Confirmation begins as school begins and students are confirmed the following September (13 months).

The Role of parents

Parents are the key.

Our students are 12 and 13. We build on what their main “life teachers” – parents – have taught them.

We challenge the parents to grow through the child’s experiences.

We encourage students to talk to their parents. Tell them what is going on and ask them questions.

The leaders must have parental support for the benefit of the youth.
